The history of the university dates to the Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society established in1841. After a series of mergers, the Huddersfield Polytechnic attained the university status in 1992 and was rechristened as the University of Huddersfield.
The university has three campus namely Queensgate Campus, University Campus Oldham (UCO), University Campus Barnsley. More than £250 million has been invested in the Queensgate Campus including £17 million investment in Business School, £3 million in Buckley Innovation Centre, £22.5 million in Student Central, £27.5 million Oastler Building for Law. Over £5.5 million has been invested in developing music, art and design, journalism, and media production facilities at the Barnsley campus

The seven academic schools of the university are Applied Sciences; Art, Design and Architecture; Computing and Engineering; Education and Professional Development; Business; Human and Health Sciences; Music, Humanities and Media.

Apart from producing ‘internationally recognized’ research, the university also houses world-class MIAMI (Microscopes and Ion Accelerators for Materials Investigation) facilities dedicated to investigations of materials sciences and energy studies.
