Registered Nurse Learning Disability Degree Apprenticeship BSc Hons

This apprenticeship course offers students the chance to study while working in learning disability healthcare services. The course focuses on developing essential skills, values, and confidence to work with people with learning disabilities, providing hands-on care and improving their quality of life. The course is designed to support a training in practice approach, with 30 hours of week spent on clinical practice or university placement. Once qualified, students can apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and work as a Registered Nurse for Learning Disabilities. The course includes lectures, workshops, seminars, group work, simulation, and role play, with individuals with learning disabilities involved in teaching materials development. The course is divided between learning theory and clinical practice, with the University's new Daphne Steele Building opening in 2024.

Entry Requirements

  • Employed in healthcare and supported by employer.
  • BBB at A Level (120 UCAS points).
  • DDM in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, Merit at T Level, NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma/Level 3 Extended Diploma at grade B.
  • Pass in Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits.
  • GCSE English Language or English Literature and Maths at grade 4 or above.
  • IELTS 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent.
  • Rehabilitation of Offenders form and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check.
  • Potential to gain accreditation for prior learning towards the course.
  • Places are limited and attainment of minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an interview or offer.
  • Nursing Associate qualification usually means Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) onto the second year of the 3-year BSc course.
  • Portfolio of evidence mapped against NMC standards of proficiency and the apprenticeship framework for Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship (RNDA).

Career opportunities in nursing include working in local healthcare trusts, charities, and short-term care providers, as well as high-profile leadership roles supporting people with learning disabilities and specialist needs. Post-qualification, there are various training and career opportunities, including managing local service providers, working in dual diagnosis services, specialist services for Autistic Spectrum Disorders, drug management, consultant nurse specialist, nurse lecturer, and policy maker and advisor.
