Film Production BA (Hons)

Our multi-award winning film production course aims to improve your creative, practical, and technical filmmaking skills while also allowing you to connect theory to practice. This course is practice-oriented, so you will learn about film production by making films. Working as a multi-disciplinary practitioner, you will learn how to research, develop, write, produce, direct, shoot, edit, and promote your own short films.
You will work on practical film production projects and create a portfolio of creative work to support your future career goals. You'll be part of a creative community of students who are passionate about pursuing careers in the film industry. You'll collaborate across the Department of Media Performance and Communication, taking on key crew roles on creative projects and broadening your filmmaking experience.

Entry Requirements

112-120 UCAS Tariff points

    A Levels - grades BBC or equivalent

  • Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma - grade DMM

  • Access to HE Diploma - Pass Access with a minimum of 80 UCAS tariff points. Applicants to Staffs who are taking the Access to HE Diploma receive a reduced tariff point offer as part of our access and participation plan activity

  • UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma - grade of Merit overall

  • OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - grade DMM

  • T Levels - Elig

Course Details

The course aims to develop knowledge, confidence, and skills in filmmaking through encouragement and professional practice. It integrates theoretical, technical, practical, and creative modes of learning, with students making films every semester. The course focuses on teamwork, individuality, and professionalism.
In the first year, students learn to collaborate and develop skills through working with staff, peers, and industry professionals. They learn fundamental filmmaking practices such as directing, producing, cinematography, sound design, and post-production. They study both theoretical and practical elements of film production to explore their future career direction and influence their creative output.
In the second year, students develop their skills and creativity as filmmakers by formulating innovative ideas and acquiring advanced filmmaking skills. They can tailor their studies to include theoretical and contextual understanding of creative film production processes and techniques that align with their future career aspirations.
In the third year, students demonstrate professionalism by establishing a network of industry contacts and promoting their skills to employers via their portfolio. The course is informed by research and changes periodically to reflect developments in the discipline. If a module cannot be run, students will be advised and provided guidance on selecting an appropriate alternative module.
