MSc Health and Medical Simulation

This innovative and contemporary programme is designed for medical doctors, medical & nursing educators, other healthcare professionals and technicians with a specialist interest in simulation based medical education. In addition to being a highly sought after method of learning and teaching, clinical simulation (both high and low fidelity) is seen as an effective method of reducing clinical risk. 

This programme will provide students with the skills to maximise the use of simulation based medical education to enhance the knowledge, skills and experiences of their students, act as consultants in building their own simulation provision and the use of simulation as a means of identifying system failure.

Postgraduate Medicine at the University has been highly evaluated for its standard of teaching and student support and students will benefit from using an expanding range of simulation facilities supported by expert academic, clinical and technical staff.

Entry Requirements

A first degree in a related discipline, although applicants with evidence of equivalent professional/academic experience will be considered.

Normally two years full time (or equivalent) experience within a relevant field of practice.

Normally employed in a relevant area of practice whilst enrolled on the programme.

Overseas students will need to satisfy the University's English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 or above (or TOEFL equivalent). If you do not have the required level of English for entry, our academic English courses can help you to achieve this level.

Course Details

The programme of study follows a flexible, modular approach which offers students the opportunity to study a comprehensive range of subjects pertinent to the provision of high-quality simulation education practice. The curriculum contained within the two specialist modules includes simulation pedagogy, the design and delivery of scenarios, contemporary debriefing, planning simulation facilities, programming simulators, patient-safety, human factors and non-technical skills, clinical governance, risk management. 

This programme provides both optional and compulsory access to related specialist content to broaden student’s educational expertise which is invaluable in today’s competitive workplace and brings a richness to the overall programme from an inter-professional and intra-professional perspective.
