Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies BA (Hons)

Students will study Spanish and Portuguese and the cultures and societies of countries where these languages are spoken.

Studying Spanish and Portuguese offers a wealth of opportunities and possibilities. As well as aiming to provide communication skills in two major global languages, this course gives students cultural and intercultural knowledge, not only about Spain and Portugal, but the 20 Latin American countries where these languages are spoken.

The course at Chester allows you to study the Spanish and Portuguese languages, as well as cultures of the many countries where the two global languages are spoken.

You also have the opportunity for two placements abroad, a shorter placement in the second year, and for most students, a full academic year placement, or two placements abroad during the third year of the degree.

Our Languages For All programme allows you to also study one of eleven languages at a range of levels in addition to your degree. Fees are fully reimbursed on completion of the course.

You may choose to complete an Introduction to TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) which might be particularly helpful if you are intending to work as a language assistant during your year abroad or in the longer term.

Career Prospects

A degree in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies develops a range of skills, including strong communication and presentation skills, the ability to work autonomously and in groups, analytical and critical discernment, and the resilience and confidence developed during placements abroad. Graduates from the Modern Languages Department often pursue further study or careers in translation, teaching, business, hospitality, civil service or in international organisations. The University has an award-winning Careers and Employability service which provides a variety of employability-enhancing experiences through the curriculum, through employer contact, tailored group sessions, individual information, advice and guidance. Students and graduates of the University of Chester can use our services free of charge for up to two years after graduating.

Course Details

The curriculum for this course is subject to change from time to time due to curriculum enhancement, staff changes, student numbers, improvements in technology, changes to placements or regulatory or external body requirements. In Year 1, students will develop confidence in written/spoken skills across the two languages and acquire study skills. In Year 2, students will increase their levels of linguistic control and focus on important political/social/cultural aspects of the countries they are studying. In Year 3, students will consolidate their advanced language skills and demonstrate their fluency in presentations, debates, discussions and research modules.
