Our BSc in Physical Education (PE) is a course that is aimed at students who are considering a future career in teaching PE. The course covers the relevant theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as providing you with the opportunity to gain experience in planning and delivering lessons.

Why study this course with us?

This course has been designed by former PE teachers to reflect the knowledge and experience required by students who are aiming to move into the profession. All modules are delivered by experienced PE staff with strong academic profiles, who are aware of the knowledge and skills required to be a successful PE teacher. All three levels of study involve teaching experience across a range of age ranges and in a variety of activities.

We promote informal mentoring on the Physical Education degree, which helps our students get to know each other between year groups socially but can also offer more academic support when needed.

Career Prospects

The University of Chester offers both the PGCE and Schools Direct route into initial teacher training (ITT). Staff will provide all students with the relevant guidance to complete their application through UCAS and a range of support with the interview process. The University has an award-winning Careers and Employability service which provides a variety of employability-enhancing experiences through the curriculum, employer contact, tailored group sessions, individual information, advice and guidance. The service is inclusive, impartial, welcoming, informed and tailored to personal goals and aspirations, and provides access to part-time jobs, extra-curricular employability-enhancing workshops and practical one-to-one help with career planning. Students and graduates of the University can use our services free of charge for up to two years after graduating.

Course Details

The curriculum for this course is subject to change from time to time due to curriculum enhancement, staff changes, student numbers, improvements in technology, changes to placements or regulatory or external body requirements. In Year 1, students will develop their knowledge of key pedagogical theory and practical activities such as swimming, gymnastics and dance. In Year 2, pedagogical content becomes focused on more specific groups and practical elements include outdoor adventurous activities and athletics. Year 3 involves teaching experience on the University campus and in a local school and a dissertation to gain an in-depth understanding of a contemporary PE issue.
