Our Games Development degree aims to produce industry-ready graduates with all the skills, knowledge and experience required to successfully enter a career in computer game design. Our game design courses teach the programming, design, artistic and professional skills used across the industry, using the same tools and software used by real-world developers. There is a focus on creating full, portfolio ready work, integrating all taught skills into individual and group-based projects.

Accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional.

Entry Requirements

Typical Entry: 

112 UCAS points
GCE A Level: 
112 UCAS points from GCE A Levels or equivalent. Typical offer - BCC/BBC. GCSE Maths grade C or above is also required.

English Language Requirements: 

IELTS Academic: Undergraduate: 6.0 (no less than 5.5 in any band)
Postgraduate: 6.5 (no less than 5.5 in any band)

Career Prospects

Graduates of this course typically enter the games industry in any one of a number of roles, such as programmer, technical artist, tester, 3D modeller, software engineer, level designer, project manager or environment artist. It is also excellent preparation for those wishing to start their own, independent games company after graduation.

Course Details

The Department of Computer Science is an innovative, forward-thinking department with a strong rate of student satisfaction and employability.  In addition to receiving tutoring, mentoring, guidance and support from academic staff, you may also experience events featuring industry professionals, or perhaps work on an extra-curricular project such as a game jam with your peers. We also work in conjunction with the Informatics Centre, an on-site software development team where students may be employed to work on commercial projects.

In Year 1, you will begin by learning the fundamentals of game development, technical requirements and standards, making use of leading-edge development tools.

In Year 2, you will further develop your understanding across all the key areas of games development, and undertake individual and collaborative projects.

As you reach Year 3, in addition to some core advanced development skills, you will have the chance to focus on specialist areas of games development that interest you.
