Northumbria University Newcastle - Entrepreneurship BA (Hons)

Northumbria University Newcastle

Entrepreneurship BA (Hons)

Our flexible, international BA (Hons) Entrepreneurship builds the skills you need to start and run your own business, as well as make your mark in the corporate world. Northumbria University's Entrepreneurship course combines study of entrepreneurial theory with practical learning and problem-solving. You can pursue a pathway with optional research-based modules which explore different aspects of entrepreneurship, or you can follow a business start-up route and create your own company.

The aim is to provide you with flexibility and choice. Following a common first year focusing on building the foundations for entrepreneurship, the second year provides for your choice of pathway, with the student enterprise route giving an optional route to apply your new leadership and management knowledge to establishing and managing your own business. If you prefer a more conventional approach, you can alternatively choose a route with specialist modules.

Career Prospects

Making your career happen is at the heart of our approach – with every module designed to reinforce the transferable skills you’ll need in the workplace. We’ve also introduced dedicated modules on career-development skills: Professional Career Development and Entrepreneurial Management.

Beyond the classroom, you’ll have opportunities to develop further career edge through practical experience and wider learning. In your second year, you can spend a semester studying abroad, or take an extra year before your final year studying elsewhere in the EU, or further afield such as the USA, Australia or China. There’s also our Business Clinic, offering you the chance to work with real clients to help solve their business challenges.

Many of our entrepreneurship graduates have gone on to put their degree into practice by founding their own successful businesses – including premium tea and tea ware brand Y-Tea, award-winning themed tour operator Lundgren Tours and film production company Filmit UK.

Course Details

The course begins with a critical, evidence-based introduction to the ideas, examples and theories from the world of entrepreneurship, alongside broader marketing studies. You’ll cover topics including recognising entrepreneurial opportunities, entrepreneurial management and creativity and innovation.

In the middle of year two the course splits into two pathways. Based on your interests so far, you will chose either Pathway 1 or 2. Pathway 1 is a general entrepreneurship course and offers options on digital enterprise, family business and on key lessons from business failure. Pathway 2 is an enterprise route focusing on your own business start-up.

You’ll learn through seminars, problem-based workshops, case discussions, practical activities, group work and tutorials. To help you develop your independent learning skills, you’ll also complete directed tasks for every module – assignments you undertake in your own time.
