Accounting and Finance (Top-Up) BA (Hons)

This course will allow you to top up your existing qualifications to an honours degree in one year, while benefiting from all that Northumbria University and the city of Newcastle has to offer. You’ll build on your all-round knowledge of business, adding expertise in accounting and finance as well as transferable professional and managerial techniques.

The course includes specialist modules that cover financial reporting analysis, strategic management accounting, and international financial management. The course provides an excellent foundation for jobs in finance, banking, government, and general business leadership. One in six of the UK’s top 100 chief executives started out with a finance or accounting degree.

Entry Requirements

Standard Entry

Standard entry requires a BTEC/HND/foundation degree in Business and Finance (Accounting) at merit level. Alternatively, the following professional qualifications will also be considered:

  • AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting (level 4) plus a minimum of one year's relevant work experience
  • CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting
  • ACCA Professional Stage Part 2 completion
  • ICAEW Certificate Stage completion
  • Relevant Foundation degree or equivalent UK/Overseas qualification.

International applicants are required to have one of the following English language qualifications with grades as shown below.

  • A British Council International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 5.5
  • Pearson Academic score of 62 (or above) with a minimum score in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking of 51

Career Prospects

The course includes a module that will explicitly address the knowledge and skills you’ll need for personal and career development. As part of this you’ll explore your personality, values, abilities and interests to make a well-informed career choice and develop a career plan. In addition our Careers and Employment Service will offer a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

Every module will play a role in developing and reinforcing the transferable attributes that are necessary for graduate employment: effective time management, excellent communication, good teamwork and high level analysis.

At the end of this course you could follow previous graduates into accounting and finance roles, including training contracts with leading accounting practices. Equally you could move into a range of careers in business and management, both in the UK and around the world.

Course Details

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars and workshops. Where appropriate, you’ll engage in problem-based learning while developing hands-on skills in financial and accounting software.

There is significant emphasis on independent learning as well as self-directed and group activities as this course is, in effect, the final year of a degree course.

Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system in order to ensure a successful learning journey and the development of the necessary academic study skills. Extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, is built into the course.
