Printmaking MA

MA Printmaking at MDX is designed as a point of convergence for anyone who wishes to see print as a broad cultural space, a core element of our everyday experience of the world, and a channel for the visual communication of your narratives. Here you will be encouraged to step across perceived barriers that traditionally separate disciplines, frames of reference, working methods, means of production, and dissemination and come together within an intergenerational and intersectional collective of practitioners, animated by their deep interest towards all manifestations of ‘making through print’.

Whether your point of departure or the set destination of your thinking and making, we welcome you within this print-centred learning environment where you will be guided to develop your unique approach and position through practical work, tailored research, and a critical understanding of your practice.

Why study Printmaking at Middlesex University?

The driving force of this program is its positioning within the expanded field of printmaking practice and thinking. It engages with wider critical and cultural debates that understand print as embracing a multitude of positions cutting across art practice, craft, technology, social engagement, and research. Printmaking is understood as part of a visual culture of printed matter embracing at the same time traditional skills, technological innovations, and the digital revolution; in these contexts, artworks can be understood as part of much wider systems of production of cultural objects and their analysis as evidence of social, political and cultural narratives in a changing world.

By paying attention to the tradition of making within visual culture and its importance as our culture becomes increasingly dematerialized, this MA in Printmaking can afford broad latitudes of expertise, ambitions, and opportunities for our students and their future beyond the course.

MA Printmaking is flexibly designed to meet the ambitions of students from a wide range of creative backgrounds and previous expertise, with an inclusive approach to all those who wish to employ the broad variety of ‘print making’ as their main strategic production asset.

Its main drive is to work towards a clear position within your artistic practice, supported by the MA cohort, tutors, and the wider university, to develop a final body of work, produced to a high standard of technical expertise and intellectual rigor and with an appropriate dissemination strategy. You will be encouraged to actively use the MA to forge your path.

You will be taught by visual culture academics and printmaking professionals in the world-class facilities and specialist workshops in our £80 million Grove building, the home of arts and creative industries at Middlesex.

Course Details

The MA Printmaking course offers a structured approach to developing and completing a substantial body of print-based work for an external public exhibition/dissemination. The course focuses on individual and collective experimentation, research, analysis, and creative exploration. Students may work in the print workshop, using materials like metal and wood, printed textiles, or CAD workshops, such as laser-cutting machines and 3D printers.
Graduation from these paths includes direct applied experience in traditional printing methods and modern digital printing techniques, as well as the skills to conduct detailed contextual research. The expertise gained through these paths can be applied to design, craft, and other forms of artwork, as well as a broad knowledge of print-centered visual culture, history, and practices.
Optional modules are typically available at levels 5 and 6, although they are not offered on every course. Students will be asked to make their choice during the previous academic year. If an optional module is not offered, the program will advise students after the selection period or at the earliest time the programme team decides not to run the module and help them choose an alternative module.
