Entry Requirements

  • We normally require a relevant second class honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent. We accept awards from a wide range of subjects including medicine, nursing, social science, education or law. A ‘pass’ in an appropriate mathematics Level 2 qualification is recommended as is a previous H&S qualification and/or work experience
  • We also consider candidates with NeBOSH Diploma and NeBOSH international Diploma or other relevant qualifications
  • Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate three years' relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level
  • We recommend students have some prior experience and understanding of the world of work and an interest in different industries.
  • The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components).

Course Details

The MSc Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Management course aims to teach students the importance of dynamic organizational culture, management and leadership strategies, and risk communication for enhancing safety performance. It covers workplace hazards, work equipment, chemical, physical, and biological hazards, environmental management systems, pollution prevention, legislation, and environmental regulators. The course also covers risks from commercial and industrial processes and the concept of Best Available Technology (BAT) in industrial environmental management and control.
The course prepares students for a career in occupational safety and health by developing knowledge, understanding, and practical skills necessary for future practice. It equips students with problem-solving abilities, prioritizing options, and selecting appropriate communication formats. Students will be able to select, apply, and evaluate various inspection and investigation techniques, making informed decisions and recommendations in complex situations. They will also be able to operate successfully in a culturally diverse and globally-oriented society.
Optional modules are available at levels 5 and 6, but may not be offered on every course. If an option is not offered, the programme will advise students after the selection period or assist in choosing an alternative module.
