  • William Schabas, Professor of International Law, is a world-leading expert on genocide and the death penalty and has served on numerous international bodies including the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission and as the chairman of the UN Commission of Inquiry into the Gaza war.
  • Giulia Pecorella, Senior Lecture of Law, has published her monograph on the US and the crime of aggression and has additional research interests in international criminal law, international humanitarian law, international organisations and dispute resolution.
  • Anthony Cullen, Senior Lecturer in Law, is an expert in international human rights law, the legal regulation of the use of force, military law and the law of armed conflict.

Entry Requirements

  • The University's standard entry requirement consists of a Law degree at 2:2 or Graduate Diploma in Law/CPE
  • Graduates in related disciplines, with law minors or with relevant professional experience or qualifications may be admitted subject to the programme leader's discretion
  • The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components).

The LLM/PGDip/PGCert International Law programme is designed for students interested in working in various roles related to international law, including academics, solicitors, barristers, policy advisors, and across multiple jurisdictions. The programme offers specialist advice from the Programme Leader and other contributors, including guidance on recruitment processes for national and international organizations. Students also have access to support services offered by the Clinical Legal Education program and career-focused workshops, skills sessions, and events. The programme's team of world-renowned lecturers provides the latest thinking and practice on legal issues, and students benefit from their extensive network of contacts and connections, including internship opportunities within international and domestic organizations like the United Nations and local companies providing professional legal services.

Course Details

The LLM/PGDip/PGCert International Law program offers four core modules, two optional modules, and a Dissertation period in term three. The full-time LLM program consists of 180 credits, while the part-time LLM program consists of 120 credits and a Dissertation period. The Part-time PG Diploma program consists of four core modules, two optional modules, and a Dissertation period.
Students can choose between two modules in term one and two modules in term two, or two modules in term one and two. Attendance may be required during the day and/or evening, depending on the chosen modules. Each module is typically worth 20 credits, except for the Dissertation and Work Integrated Learning modules, which are worth 60 credits each. The Work Integrated Learning module may be chosen to replace the Dissertation with prior agreement.
Additional optional modules are available in international politics, criminology, and sociology, such as Sustainable Development and Human Rights, Environmental Law and Governance, Migration Theories and Approaches, and Politics of Globalisation. Not all modules listed will be available in any one year, and availability depends on staffing and student numbers.
Optional modules are not offered on every course, and students will be advised after the selection period or at the earliest time the programme team decides not to run the module. These modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, but may not be offered on every course.
