Our commercial law degree gives you the initial skills and qualifications to pursue qualified solicitor or barrister status in England and Wales. Commercial law courses give you the foundational skills and training to advance your career in commercial law, commerce or business.

Building a specialist understanding of commercial law, you’ll enhance your awareness of the various contexts in which the law operates. You’ll also learn to analyse and evaluate a variety of legal systems through work-based and skills-based modules. Here, you’ll gain hands-on experience that’s relevant to both the legal profession and the wider commercial sectors.

Developing your practical legal skills

You’ll have the option to transfer to one of our overseas campuses in Mauritius or Dubai for a year (or more) of your studies.

We’ll match you with professional legal bodies and practitioners who will help you develop specialist mooting and mediation skills. You’ll have the opportunity to take part in national and international mooting and mediation competitions. You can also experience the buzz and atmosphere of the court room in our specialist chambers located inside Hendon Town Hall, which was built in 1901.

Career Prospects

LLB Commercial Law is a valuable resource for students interested in pursuing a career in commercial legal practice or in-house legal services. It provides a solid foundation in legal understanding and skills for management, consultancy, or entrepreneurship. Students can pursue professional qualifications, such as the Solicitors Qualifying Exam for solicitors and the Bar Practice Course/Barrister Training Course for barristers. The LLB complies with the Bar Standard's Board requirements for the academic component of Bar training, including the seven Foundations of Legal Knowledge. The LLB also serves as a good basis for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), which is introduced in September 2021. Graduates may also study for masters degrees before pursuing professional exams. LLB Commercial Law is highly sought after in various sectors, including business, charity, management, administration, the Civil Service, education, and government.

Course Details

The LLB Commercial Law course consists of three years: Year 1, which covers English Legal System, Legal Method, Public Law, and Contract Law; Year 2, which covers Criminal Law, Tort, EU Law, English and International Commercial Law; and Year 3, which covers Land Law, Equity and Trusts, and Company Law. The course aims to develop students' knowledge, understanding, and cognitive and practical skills through lectures, seminars, workshops, and self-directed study. Graduates with a strong understanding of business and legal analysis will have a competitive advantage in the competitive legal field. The course covers primary sources of law, such as case law, legislation, and institutions. Students will gain the ability to identify, analyze, and apply legal principles and concepts to complex situations, making reasoned judgments based on informed arguments. They will also undertake independent research and manage information from various sources, ensuring accurate legal terminology is used in moots, presentations, and writing.
