This course is designed for healthcare practitioners, including sonographers and physiologists, already working in the field of cardiac ultrasound.

Entry Requirements

  • We welcome applications from graduates with a 2:1 honours degree, or an equivalent qualification, in a health or science-based subject
  • Applicants must normally be a clinical physiologist but those from other healthcare professions (clinical exercise physiologist, and medical practitioners) are also welcomed
  • We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications and individuals with a minimum of three years' work experience in clinical physiology
  • Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level
  • The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 7.0 with minimum of 6.5 in each component or higher required.

The MSc/PGDip/PGCert Cardiac Ultrasound course is tailored for healthcare practitioners, including physicians, nurses, and physiologists, working in cardiopulmonary ultrasound. Graduates are qualified to work as specialized cardiac physiologists in the NHS or abroad. The course also prepares graduates for research or academic careers, providing knowledge and skills for further study at doctoral level. Graduates can progress into careers in organizations like NHS, General Electric Co, Johnson & Johnson, Siemens, and Medtronic.

Course Details

The MSc/PGDip/PGCert Cardiac Ultrasound course covers the theory and practice of cardiac ultrasound and advanced signal processing, as well as a leadership and management component that covers legal and ethical issues related to biomedical research and clinical practice. Students will gain a solid foundation in experimental design and statistics, as well as the opportunity to undertake an independent research project under academic supervision. The course prepares students for leadership roles and provides a solid foundation in research methodologies required for biomedical research. It is suitable for national examinations in echocardiography. Optional modules are available at levels 5 and 6, but not all courses offer them. Students will be asked to choose their preferred module during the previous academic year. If an optional module is not offered, the programme will advise students after the selection period or at the earliest time that the programme team makes the decision not to run the module and help them choose an alternative module.
