This course is designed to meet the increasing demand worldwide for graduates with the competencies and knowledge to operate as generalists in multiple parts of the Tourism and Hospitality industries and beyond. This is achieved by providing the transferrable specialist knowledge and skills that will enable graduates to communicate and manage effectively within a multi-cultural environment.


Furthermore, this course is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), in the recognition of level of professional study incorporated into the course.

MSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management graduates will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills, which will help them, pursue career opportunities in the tourism, hospitality and leisure industries, in the private and public sector or to start their own business.

Extended Professional Practice

This course offers the option of undertaking Extended Professional Practice. Our Extended MSc courses are delivered over 18 months instead of the usual 12 months, giving you the opportunity to undertake a longer internship* or project as part of your course.

You will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how businesses operate, how to apply theory to real-world scenarios, and how best to prepare you for the world of business with confidence.

Our Talent Team are here to support you in securing an extended placement with the right employer. Whether you are looking to join a small business or a large organisation, the team will work with you to help you achieve your internship goal.
Your placement will be full-time, with students expected to work approximately 35 hours per week.

The Extended Professional Practice course lasts 5 semesters; during semesters 1 and 2 you will undertake 120 taught credits on-campus; in semesters 3 and 4 you will undertake the placement; in the final semester, you will take a 60-credit project module in which you will write up your internship report and research findings.

Entry Requirements

A second class honours degree (2:2) or equivalent.

Applications from candidates with relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis. Work experience is desirable but not essential.

English as a Foreign Language: This course requires IELTS of 6.5 or equivalent. 

Career Prospects

The rapid development and constant evolution of the hospitality and tourism industries highlights the need for talented leaders, capable of thinking strategically. They will need to be able to anticipate developments in the traditional tourism business models and operate effectively within a fast-moving global environment.

Graduates from this course are likely to head for a management career in either tourism or hospitality, as your in-depth knowledge, transferrable skills and practical knowledge will be a major advantage. Due to the strategic and transferable nature of many of your modules, such as Finance, Human Resource Management, Strategic Management and Events and Project management), you’ll be well-equipped to seek roles in a wide range of sectors.

These roles can include:
• Management or leadership roles in hospitality and/or tourism
• Graduate training programmes
• You might choose to work in hotels or resorts, the leisure industries, events management, or even catering
• Various roles for tour operators, online travel agencies, national airlines, a government ministry or a resort
• There are also opportunities working within the public sector for a destination management organisation
• Corporate travel or incentive travel
• You might develop a real interest in a specialist issue, such as the customer experience or sustainability. You could even work in a connected field, such as consultancy, publishing, journalism or IT

Course Details

This exciting Masters course will introduce you to the core concepts of the hospitality and tourism industries. In this evolving global marketplace, things change quickly so we need to be able to respond quickly and plan for future eventualities. You will develop the knowledge and skills set required to do this by studying modules such as Strategic Management, Destinations Management and Tourism and Hospitality Operations.

With a focus on employability, this course will equip you with the knowledge and skills that are required by employers in the hospitality and tourism industry. Moreover, we have excellent support available if you wish to start or develop your own businesses.

Furthermore, this course has business at its core and will allow you to develop the management competencies required to progress your career within this dynamic industry.

Finally, you will broaden your knowledge of the international hospitality and tourism industry by being introduced to the diverse range of businesses that operate within tourism hospitality, including visitor attractions, destinations, public sector developments, heritage and hospitality.You’ll study eight core modules, which will cover essential management skills, such as financial management, human resource management and strategic management. Throughout these modules, you will develop transferable skills that are highly prized by the hospitality and tourism industry. In your final term, you will choose one of three options: Dissertation, Internship or Industry Research Project.
