Enterprise and Innovation MSc

Across the globe, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs are making strong contributions to national economies. As a result, government and business are investing heavily in enterprise and innovation.

Take our virtual tour

This Master’s degree aims to develop the entrepreneurial and enterprising skills required to increase your confidence and know-how in generating, implementing and managing new ideas in uncertain and changing contexts. Key to this is the ‘entrepreneurial mind-set’: our aim is to forge an inquisitive and creative mind, where you should learn entrepreneurship through the lenses of disruption, growth and scaling, and sustainability. This focus aims to go beyond traditional ideas of entrepreneurship to include social entrepreneurship, global enterprise and transnational entrepreneurship, gender-based rethinking of the entrepreneurial paradigm, and more.

Extended Professional Practice

This course offers the option of undertaking Extended Professional Practice. Our Extended MSc courses are delivered over 18 months instead of the usual 12 months, giving you the opportunity to undertake a longer internship* or project as part of your course.

You will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how businesses operate, how to apply theory to real-world scenarios, and how best to prepare you for the world of business with confidence.

Our Talent Team are here to support you in securing an extended placement with the right employer. Whether you are looking to join a small business or a large organisation, the team will work with you to help you achieve your internship goal.

Your placement will be full-time, with students expected to work approximately 35 hours per week.

The Extended Professional Practice course lasts 5 semesters; during semesters 1 and 2 you will undertake 120 taught credits on-campus; in semesters 3 and 4 you will undertake the placement; in the final semester, you will take a 60-credit project module in which you will write up your internship report and research findings.

*internships may be subject to availability, competitive application, meeting visa requirements and additional costs.

Entry Requirements

A second class honours degree (2:2) or equivalent.

Applications from candidates with relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis. Work experience is desirable but not essential.

A huge range of opportunities could be open to you when you graduate, whether you choose to be an entrepreneur or to follow an intrapreneur pathway (as an innovator within an existing organisation).

You should be able to recognise genuine opportunities, negotiate uncertainty, and be capable of delivering strategies for leadership in the context of self-employment, consultancy or business management.

Course Details

This Master’s degree course aims to provide an insight into a different type of enterprise. It offers you the opportunity to learn creative theory and practical skills that you might need to succeed in modern business.

Enterprise and innovation are very much about a mind-set and an approach, so you be encouraged to spend a lot of time honing these skills with your fellow students who could come from all over the world. You might explore potential areas of venture creation within an organisation, as well as freelance and management consultancy and ‘intrapreneurship’ within large corporations and public-sector organisations.

The course examines the various stakeholders in innovation, enterprise and entrepreneurship, and different types and sources of funding. You’ll have the chance to explore a variety of start-up models and analyse the opportunities that they present. You can learn to solve real business problems and consider how firms might add new innovations to their offering.

This full-time master’s degree course is offered over three terms as standard, or over five terms if you choose to do the Extended Professional Practice.

All of your modules aim to take a creative, globalised, and highly practical approach to learning. This should develop your creativity and your critical-thinking skills while giving you the chance to deepen your underpinning academic theory. We aim to help you to develop your ability to balance the needs of the many stakeholders involved in innovation (whose goals and attitudes can often conflict), and you will be taught to pitch your ideas for the best chance of success.
