Adult nursing is a dynamic, diverse and evolving profession. Our course will support you to make a positive contribution to the wellbeing of those in your care.

50% of your course will be spent in a variety of placements in both acute and community settings to support your learning and gain insight into the positive impact nurses make to individuals, families and communities. On successful completion of the course, you'll be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and gain your first job as a registered nurse.

Entry Requirements

GCSE English language and mathematics grades A-C / 4-9 or equivalent. Functional Skills Level 2 accepted.

A typical offer would be BCC at A2 Level, or equivalent

Overseas Students - all must attend for interview. There may be a possibility of conducting the interview via Skype. If English is not your first language you require IELTS overall score of 7, with scores of at least 7 in reading, listening and speaking, and at least 6.5 in writing.

Career Prospects

On successful completion of the course, you'll be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered adult nurse. This will open up a wide range of exciting career opportunities for you including working in clinical practice, management, education, research or using your skills in the armed forces. You could also choose to travel and explore the possibility of practising overseas.

Additionally, there are opportunities within the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing to progress onto postgraduate study, including Continuing Professional Development courses, MSc or PhD studies.

Course Details

Throughout the course, you'll gain skills to assess and care for adults who have a wide variety of healthcare needs. You'll also develop the skills and knowledge you need to become a leader in the adult nursing profession and to contribute to service improvement.

Real life scenarios will be used within some sessions so you can discuss and share your thoughts and learning within a safe and confidential environment. In addition, your simulated practice sessions will be related to the theory you learn to help you make important links between this theory and caring for people in practice.

You'll explore areas including:

  • nursing knowledge and skills
  • health promotion
  • evidence-based compassionate person-centred care
  • clinical science
  • collaborative working with a range of health and social care professionals.

You'll experience a wide range of practice placements and you'll also have the opportunity to work interprofessionally with departments that also care for adults, such as theatres and outpatients.

Most of the lecturers who facilitate your learning are nurses from a variety of different specialist backgrounds within adult nursing.

By the end of the course, you'll have developed a strong understanding of a wide range of health issues that people may face and you'll know how to deal with them effectively, to intervene quickly or early enough to reduce the chances of future health problems.
