The advertising industry plays a key role in communicating between the company and its customers – both online, outdoor and through many different media and social media channels.

With the growth of digital media, advertising has becoming more challenging but to stand out from competitors, companies have turned to new and more creative approaches to make sure their brand is heard.

This course puts advertising firmly in context of wider marketing and business activity. It is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to work effectively in advertising and marketing. You will learn how to combine creativity with business strategy, how  to create effective advertising messages, and how to produce convincing presentations to convey ideas.

Career Prospects

Successful graduates are equipped to work in a wide and varied range of roles across the advertising industry, from specialist advertising and media agencies to working within in-house marketing departments. There are also opportunities to work in brand management and communication, digital marketing, social media strategy, and media planning. Alternatively, you may wish to go on to postgraduate studies in marketing, brand communications and branding strategy.

Course Details

As part of your course, you will study specialist modules in advertising strategy, media planning, creative campaign development and brand management and communication.

You will explore areas including:

  • advertising campaign development
  • branding
  • marketing principles and practice
  • consumer behaviour and insight.
  • copywriting

In your first year you will take introductory modules that give you a solid grounding in marketing with some wider business knowledge. In your second and third years you take core modules to build your branding, digital and consumer knowledge with option modules select modules to help you develop your career interests. Options include copywriting and content creation, market research, digital and social media marketing, international and intercultural marketing communication.

Between years two and three, you can choose to spend a year in a full-time, paid work placement, with support from the Business School and the University’s career development service. This valuable opportunity enhances your knowledge and professional development.
