This integrated Master's program will teach you how to create successful commercial products. You will be encouraged to think creatively about problem-solving while also considering the functional, social, and economic needs of your design. Learn how to make physical models and prototypes, as well as computer models that are industry-standard.
Until your final year, you will follow the same curriculum as the BA (Hons)/BSc (Hons) Product Design.
Utilize cutting-edge facilities such as a CAD laboratory and our Innovation Centre.
Spend at least 30 weeks of your third year on a work placement in a relevant industry.
In your final year, create a working prototype of your own original product and exhibit it at our annual Festival of Design & Engineering.

Graduate with a diverse set of skills that will enable you to pursue a variety of careers in the industry, from designer to production manager. 90% of our graduates found work or continued their education within 15 months of finishing their course.

Course accreditation

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers to fully meet the requirements for Chartered Technological Product Designer (CTPD) registration for intakes between 2019-2023. Accredited courses are fully supported by the Institution, and IED student membership is free to full-time students for the duration of their studies.  

Entry Requirements

  • 104-120 UCAS tariff points including 2 A-levels or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.

  • GCSE English Language or English Literature and Mathematics grade 4 (or grade C in the old grading system). We also accept iGCSEs, Key Skills, and Functional Skills, and other qualifications at Level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework.

  • 102–118 UCAS tariff points with any combination of Distinction, Merit, And Pass grades.

  • IELTS (Academic) 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or equivalent.

Career Prospects

This course combines practical skills, academic knowledge, and extensive work experience to give you a leg up on the job search. Learning about the practicalities of producing actual products will provide you with a thorough understanding of the manufacturing process, preparing you for positions ranging from designer to production manager. Of course, you'll have a Master of Design Postgraduate qualification from the IED, which is accredited on behalf of the Engineering Council.
After graduation, you can post your CV on the IED job board and receive discounted membership rates.

You will be prepared for a variety of roles once you've finished your course, including:

  • CAD engineer
  • Design & development engineer
  • Product designer
  • Product development manager.

Course Details

On this course you will be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit. This will include senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators, technicians and research students. You will also benefit from regular guest lectures from industry.
