BSc (Hons) Product Design

This course will teach you how to create successful commercial products. You will be encouraged to approach problem-solving in a creative and innovative manner, while also addressing the functional, social, and economic needs of your design. Learn how to make physical models and prototypes, as well as computer models that are industry standard.
Utilize cutting-edge facilities such as a CAD laboratory and our Innovation Centre.
Spend at least 30 weeks of your third year on a work placement in a relevant industry.
In your final year, create a working prototype of your own original product and exhibit it at our annual Festival of Design & Engineering.
Choose to continue your undergraduate studies and earn a Master of Design (MDes) in Product Development

Course accreditation

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers to fully meet the requirements for Registered Product Designer (RProdDes) registration for intakes between 2019-2023. Accredited courses are fully supported by the Institution, and IED student membership is free to full-time students for the duration of their studies.

Entry Requirements

  • 104-120 UCAS tariff points including 2 A-levels or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.

  • GCSE English Language or English Literature and Mathematics grade 4 (or grade C in the old grading system). We also accept iGCSEs, Key Skills, and Functional Skills, and other qualifications at Level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework.

  • 102–118 UCAS tariff points with any combination of Distinction, Merit, And Pass grades.

  • IELTS (Academic) 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or equivalent.

This course combines practical skills, academic knowledge, and extensive work experience to give you a leg up on the job search. Learning about the practicalities of producing actual products will provide you with a thorough understanding of the manufacturing process, preparing you for positions ranging from designer to production manager.
A placement year is critical in preparing graduates to be well-rounded and industry-ready.

After completing your course, you will be prepared for a variety of roles, including:

Course Details

On this course you will be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit.
