BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice (with Foundation Year option)

Become an essential member of the operating department team. Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) are in charge of providing patients with safe, high-quality care during anesthesia, surgery, and post-anesthesia care (recovery). ODPs collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that every operation is as safe and effective as possible in order to save or improve the lives of patients.
Our purpose-built facilities include an operating theatre simulation suite with highly accurate and life-like manikins to prepare you for placement and beyond.
Gain hands-on experience working in surgical theatres through a variety of practical work placements that account for slightly more than half of your course time. Actively practicing lecturers and those with perioperative experience will teach you.

Foundation Year: For UK students who do not meet the entry requirements for the degree course, we offer a Foundation Year option. This extra year of study will provide you with a solid foundation in the scientific skills required to prepare you for the ODP degree, as well as boost your confidence, knowledge, and skills for further study. Our Talbot Campus is home to the Foundation Year. After completing the Foundation Year successfully, you will progress to the full degree and begin your ODP studies.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE English Language or English Literature and Mathematics grade 4 (or grade C in the old grading system). We also accept iGCSEs, Key Skills Functional Skills, and other qualifications at Level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework.
  • 104–120 tariff points to include a minimum of 2 A-levels or equivalent.
  • 102–118 UCAS tariff points from any combination of Distinction, Merit, and Pass grades.
  • IELTS (Academic) 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component, or equivalent.

Career Prospects

You might think that the name of this course covers all possible career paths, but the skills you'll gain through this degree will prepare you for a role in critical care as well as operating room practice. You will be highly employable across the country. Although the majority of our graduates work in operating rooms, an increasing number are moving into other areas of critical care, such as anaesthesia, helicopter emergency medical services, and trauma teams.
As a result, an ODP qualification is extremely versatile and can lead to a variety of careers and healthcare environments, including:

  • First assistant to the surgeon
  • Surgical assistant
  • Accident and emergency
  • Manager
  • Anaesthesic practitioner
