Many nurses may wish to pursue training for a different part of the nursing register at some point in their careers. This course provides a conversion opportunity for those who want to move from one part of the nursing register to mental health nursing. After completing this two-year program, you will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Mental Health Nursing. Within 15 months of finishing their studies, 95% of our nursing graduates are employed or enrolled in further education.
Acceptance into the course is contingent on factors such as the applicant's initial field of registration, holding a nursing degree qualification, and the date of the applicant's original registration.

Course accreditation 

Accredited by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), this course will prepare you to be eligible to register and practice as a mental health nurse and to graduate with a BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing degree.

Entry Requirements

  • 2:2 in a Nursing Degree. Applicants need to be qualified nurses in the UK and have worked as a nurse for at least one year before the start of the course in their initial field of registration.

     

  • If English is not your first language you will need IELTS (Academic) 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in writing and 7.0 in all other components. The NMC also accepts the Occupational English Test (OET).

This program is intended for practicing nurses who want to move from one section of the nursing register to another, and it will provide you with excellent career advancement opportunities. Following graduation, you may pursue the following positions:

  • Mental health nurse in an in-patient environment (e.g. acute admissions unit, elderly care, treatment wards, psychiatric intensive care unit, or rehabilitation)
  • Community mental health nurse
  • Staff nurse
  • Specialist nurse (covering the likes of eating disorders, addictions, forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, or psychological therapy).

Course Details

This course prepares you to work in a variety of mental health settings with a diverse range of people. You will gain inter-professional practice experience and develop skills in mental health nursing across the lifespan. The BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing course is part of the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences' Nursing Framework, which also includes BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing and BSc (Hons) Children & Young People's Nursing courses with advanced standing. We have developed this course as part of a co-ordinated suite of nursing courses to enhance student learning and prepare you for practice. Our approach to interprofessional education entails students participating in shared workshops, lectures, and learning events with other students enrolled in health-related courses throughout the course.
