If you want to work in the fast-paced, deadline-driven world of sports journalism, this is the course for you. Learn the knowledge and skills required to work in a multi-platform, digitally-focused sports journalism industry. Participate in authentic news days and provide in-depth coverage of local sports, including AFC Bournemouth and other clubs. Graduates will be prepared to work as sports and convergence specialists, as well as be agile enough to respond to new technologies and consumer/audience behavior. Showcase your sports journalism to the public through BUzz, BU's campus radio station, Nerve magazine, and your own social media channels and websites. Make priceless industry connections while working with national and regional media organizations for four or thirty weeks. Learn from experienced professionals, such as senior industry guests and successful alumni.

Foundation year: For UK students who do not meet the entry requirements for the degree course, we offer a foundation year. This extra year of study will provide you with a solid foundation in the media and communication skills required for this course and boost your confidence, knowledge, and skills for further study. You will progress to the full degree after completing the foundation year.

Course accreditations


National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) accreditation is very prominent on the course and you'll study towards the Level 5 NCTJ Diploma in Journalism during their three years at BU. You'll have the opportunity to gain this important industry qualification and graduate with the Gold standard (A-C) or standard diploma. Gaining this important industry qualification will increase employability and ensure you are ready for a fast-paced newsroom. The tuition and first-sit exam fees are included in university fees.

Entry Requirements

  • 104 - 120 UCAS tariff points including a minimum of two A-levels or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.

  • Foundation year:

     

    48 - 72 UCAS tariff points.

  • If English is not your first language you'll need IELTS (Academic) 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in writing and 6.0 in all other components, or equivalent.

Career Prospects

The 24-hour news cycle has altered the work and reporting methods of sports journalists. This course will prepare you for a job in this field, where you will be expected to work across multiple channels and mediums. Depending on your area of specialization, the course will prepare you for a wide range of positions.

  • National and regional online sports reporting and writing
  • Writing for national sports magazines
  • Freelance reporting across the media
