As the only history degree in the UK housed within a Faculty of Media & Communication, with a focus on Modern History, Media History, and Public History, you'll gain practical and professional skills that will prepare you for a variety of careers. You will not only study history in the traditional sense, but you will also explore a wide range of topics by using newspapers, online sites, sound recordings, television, and film.
You will be evaluated through exhibitions, posters, websites, podcasts, blogs, and even a mock peace conference, in addition to traditional essays and exams.
Participate in public history by collaborating with a variety of outside organizations such as museums, archives, and heritage organizations.

Foundation Year: For UK students who do not meet the entry requirements for the degree course, we offer a Foundation Year option. This extra year of study will provide you with a solid foundation in the media and communication skills required for this course, as well as boost your confidence, knowledge, and skills for further study. You will progress to the full degree after successfully completing the Foundation Year.

Where could a History degree take you?

Our BA (Hons) History degree aims to develop critically informed, skilled, enterprising, and resourceful graduates who can enter a range of career paths including teachers, heritage workers, archivists, and researchers alongside a variety of other professions from banking and PR work to journalism and the Civil Service. 

Entry Requirements

  • 104 - 120 UCAS tariff points including a minimum of 2 A-levels or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.

  • If English is not your first language you'll need IELTS (Academic) 6.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in reading or writing and 5.5 in all other components, or equivalent.

Career Prospects

Our History degree examines modern British history through the lens of the media and will provide you with a thorough understanding of the academic study of history in the digital age. Throughout your course, you will gain a variety of transferable skills that will provide you with a variety of career options once you graduate.
Within fifteen months of finishing the course, 87% of our students were employed or enrolled in further education.
As a history graduate, you will have exceptional analytical and communication skills, which will equip you with a wide range of qualities that employers seek. Many of our graduates go on to work in education, marketing, local and central government, tourism, research, publishing, and broadcasting, as well as museums, historical sites, and the arts.

Course Details

On this course you will usually be taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit. This will include senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners and research students. You will also benefit from regular guest lectures from industry.
