BSc (Hons) Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

This programme combines two key areas of computing, namely data science and artificial intelligence, in a synergistic manner. Data science and Artificial Intelligence are two complementary areas of Intelligent Systems, with Data science focusing on statistical techniques and Artificial Intelligence on algorithmic techniques. Both areas are in high demand in the tech industry and for Industry 4.0. 

Data science and Artificial Intelligence jobs are amongst the best paid in the IT sector with both skills in ever increasing demand. A recent report by the European Union predicts that there will be a need for 346,000 data scientist and machine learning experts by 2020. However, the UK faces a potentially crippling shortage of such professionals, threatening businesses in the UK.

This course seeks to address the chronic shortage of suitably qualified data science and Artificial Intelligence specialists and, at the same time, prepare you for a fulfilling and varied career in this fast growing IT sector.

Entry Requirements

Qualifications

96 UCAS Points from

  • A LEVEL- Including passes at A2 in at least 2 subjects. Must include one subject in Maths or Computer Science or another relevant subject.
  • BTEC- Extended Diploma or Diploma in a numerate or Computing-related subject.
  • INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE- Diploma with 25 points including a minimum of 15 points at Higher Level and must include Maths at Higher Level

Other entry routes

Access to HE Diploma (QAA approved) with 60 credits overall and 45 credits at Level 3

English Language requirements

Overall IELTS score of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking (or recognised equivalent).

If you do not meet the academic English language requirements for your course, you may be eligible to enrol onto a pre-sessional English programme. The length of the course will depend on your current level of English and the requirements for your degree programme. We offer a 5-week and an 11-week pre-sessional course.

Alternative GCSE Qualifications

Level 2 equivalences such as Level 2 Functional Skills in English / Maths, Level 2 Key Skills in Communication / Application of Number and Level 2 Adult Literacy / Adult Numeracy

Mature applicants and those without formal qualifications

As an inclusive University, we recognise that applicants who have been out of education for some time may not have the formal qualifications usually required for entry to a course. We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and commitment to study and have the relevant life/work experience that equips them to succeed on the course. We will assess this from the information provided in your application – in particular your personal statement - to help us decide on your eligibility for the course.

Some of our former professional students are data analysts from local councils, a chief software architect from Bermuda, a business manager with EDF Energy and a system design analyst with Microsoft, to name a few. 

Our alumni range from an information security architect working at the New York Stock Exchange to entrepreneurs running a successful award-winning game design company (DinoByte labs), just to name a few.

Course Details

In addition to the modules on the course, you will also learn about the management, economic, legal, social, professional and ethical issues relating to information processing systems. 

You will also develop your communication skills, develop initiative, enhance professionalism and fine tune the ability to work independently as well as with others.

This course offers the opportunity of year-long placement between years two and three. If you choose to take this option, you’ll spend your third year on a placement with a relevant company or organisation, adding valuable practical experience to your growing academic knowledge. 

The extra placement year means it will take four years to complete your studies, instead of three.
