PGCE Primary Education

This program is designed to provide trainee teachers with the opportunity to study the theory and practice of education from the perspective of learners, teachers, administrators, policymakers, and other key stakeholders in the system of formal education. It combines work based at the University with school experience to equip trainee teachers with the knowledge, understanding, and skills that they need to begin to develop as a professional educator. It also provides them with the skills to make effective use of theoretical and research-based evidence to extend their knowledge and understanding and to allow them to reflect critically upon their own personal and professional values.

  • To equip students to be able to provide high-quality teaching to primary-age pupils regardless of the educational setting.
  • To enable the students to build strong, positive relationships with the pupils they teach, and their parents/carers, to support their learning.
  • To ensure students have a clear understanding of systematic synthetic phonics and appropriate maths teaching strategies.  To ensure students have a critical understanding of how children learn and the importance of ensuring the needs of all learners are taken into consideration.

A significant amount of the programs will be in school, where you progress from teaching small groups to whole classes.
  • Your school experience will be with Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Placements are organized by our Placement Learning Unit to ensure that you receive the appropriate level of support.

Entry Requirements

  • An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in  a relevant subject
  • IELTS 6.5 (with no individual skill score below 6.0) 2 years before the course start date.
  • AS / A Level English Language and/or Literature Grade C

Career Prospects

Graduates are very successful in securing teaching appointments at the end of their studies. Many take up employment in one of our partnership schools and go on to inspire and mentor other students.
