Entry Requirements

The academic requirements for the course are 80-112 UCAS tariff points at GCE A-level or equivalent.

6.0 (with no individual skill score below 5.5)

Career Prospects

This course will give you a high level of knowledge and expertise in music technology and associated subject areas. The career destinations for graduates are quite broad and are usually dependent upon the student’s individual interests and specialisms. Because of the broad skill set that is provided by the degree, graduates have also progressed into wider career paths. These have ranged from corporate roles in banking and commerce to many types of self-employed status.

Many graduates pursue career paths within the core specialism of Music Technology or associated fields. These have included:

  • Touring Sound - Front of House or Monitor Engineering, Systems Engineering, Stage Management, Instrument Technicians, Stage Technicians, Self-employed operators.
  • Event Management – Festivals, Small/Large scale venue management, Tour managing
  • Audio Visual Technicians – Freelance, Corporate and also educational paths
  • Theatre – Stage Technicians, Lighting designers, electricians, stage management
  • Teaching - We have many graduates working in Further and Higher education as well as primary and secondary schools.
  • Research and development – The course has proved to be a strong base for students progressing onto research degrees. Because of the high level of technical expertise it has also enabled students to work in research and development roles for major audio companies.

Course Details

YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4)

The first year of the course covers core creativity and technology that is required to enable you to progress. There is a good mix of subjects and manners of delivery. The science has experiments that you use to investigate audio principles. You also get hands on use in the recording studio and get to grips with recording styles. Later on you will be designing software synthesisers and using them as instruments.

YEAR 2 (LEVEL 5)

This level lets you apply skills you have learnt and add to your growing portfolio of knowledge. The new subjects complement the previous year and develop your music and music programming skills.

YEAR 3 (LEVEL 6)

This is the opportunity to apply what you have learnt and develop interesting installations and developments in music. The project or dissertation is the main piece of work and gives you the chance to explore an area to great depth, it can be designing and building firmware through to research into an aspect of the industry.
